In the Beginning
Prior to colonisation in the Western region of Victoria, the Kerrup-Tjmara Aboriginal people were a sovereign, independent, an extremely healthy tribe. There are still signs of Aboriginal presence in the area, with the Lake Condah Mission displaying examples of lifestyle during that time.

In 1800, Lieutenant James Grant made the first chart of the South Western area of the coastline of Victoria. Sighting the area from "Lady Nelson", he named Portland Bay after the English Secretary of State, the Duke of Portland. The Frenchman Baudin followed him in 1802, but it was left to Flinders to provide charts suitable for a navigator. The first settlements in these areas were by sealers and whalers. Dutton established a shore based whaling industry, with a hut and a garden in 1829. At the time, Portland Bay was one of the best whale areas in the world and the annual catches ran into hundreds.

Edward Henty arrived on November 19, 1834 to be followed later by his brothers. The Hentys were farmers, although they had a share in the whale industry. The arrival of the Henty's can rightly be said to have begun the settlement of Victoria. The first piece of soil that was turned was on December 6, 1834 at the Ploughed Field. This commenced Victoria's agricultural development. His first home -a hut- was in the vicinity of the present day Richmond Henty Hotel-Motel.

The Henty's explored far inland and established various stations. It was in 1836 that Major Mitchell, on his overland journey, met the family at their original homestead. Their flocks and herds thrived, for as early as 1839, they possessed 30,000 sheep and 500 head of cattle.

Government interference began in 1840 when the future town was surveyed by CJ Tyres. The first land sale was made in Melbourne on October 10, 1840. Considering the value of money at that time, prices were high. Town "lots" brought up to 506 pounds, the average price being 300 pounds. The land sales resulted in a building boom which absorbed all available labour for a number of years. In the period 1840-42 four hotels were established as well as four churches. The first trading bank appeared in 1846 and the Savings Bank in 1847.

Victoria's Birth Place?
For a number of years leading up to the Victorian gold rush, Portland vied with Melbourne for the status of major settlement of the southern region. Having "lost" the battle the port city has steadily developed over the past 156 years until today. Visitors will find that Portland offers most of the facilities of much larger cities, but combines them with a pristine natural environment and quality of life for residents rarely surpassed by any city.

In fact most residents would assert that, everything considered, Portland has emerged well in front from its early competition with Melbourne. As is evident from over 200 beautifully maintained heritage buildings and private residences in the City, Portland is proud of its history. It's a history which sees the city poised to take a leading role in its region and show that the settlers who made Portland "Victoria's Birthplace by the Sea" chose the location wisely.
